the howl of an old dog / J.J. Campbell

the howl of an old dog

another roadside cross

another lost highway
in southern ohio

my nightmares have
turned into old townes
van zandt songs

heartbreak

alcohol

the howl of an old
dog begging to die
under a full moon

a beautiful woman
hitched to a fading
star that lost his soul
in his youth

it's a butcher knife
on my grandmother's
kitchen table

it's temptation
asking me to jump

the smell of blood
and the rush of death

a preacher once
asked me to hang
on to any thread
of hope i could find

i asked him who
he thought he was
fooling

there's no joy in
being an old soul
at such a young age
