ADRIFT

Late winter early spring night stretched out on the roof

Lost in dreams of the coming summer and fondly aloof

Long coal train moves by on the tracks heavy and slow

I feel the thundering vibrations hear it squeal see it go

Caboose it blinks red sound fades the track shines silent

Splinter of moon on the mountain hangs red and vibrant

Will summer come I wonder to glow more convincingly

Over the dark of winter a single porchlight glows feebly

Sentence of life pending appeal lone individual existence

Up on a limb unable to play living a practical indifference

Unable to conform bound to take note but still connected

Uncommitted disconcerted not reported but still affected

Silver sunlight melting snow transformed spills to the river

Beyond the track water rises and swells up from its fissure

As I witness it move backward up away from me it rushes

To fulfill itself cold foamed landscape with froth it covers

Blue morn late winter day gray sky and what does it matter

Sunlit rails creosote smell big ledge watch the crows scatter
